The Marathon County Alcohol & Other Drugs Partnership Council (AOD Partnership) partners with many community agencies and individuals to organize multiple community drug prevention activities including:
- Community forums/presentations on local substance abuse issues.
- Community awareness and alcohol and other drug abuse prevention media campaigns (Social Norms Campaign—see description below)
- Promotion of national prevention campaigns (National Alcohol Awareness Month, Red Ribbon Week, National Drugged and Drunk Driving Prevention Month, Family Day, National Night Out, and others) which assists schools, businesses, parents, and others with raising awareness of and preventing issues associated with substance abuse.
Social Norms Campaign
The AOD Partnership along with BRAVO (Building Responsible Alcohol Values and Options) is implementing this research-based approach in the Wausau and D.C.Everest Area School Districts to address community-wide issues surrounding alcohol use. Research conducted on social norms projects indicate that it is effective in reducing youth alcohol use, as well as increasing positive and accurate perceptions and norms concerning alcohol use. The Social Norms Campaign uses a variety of methods to correct negative misconceptions and to identify, model, and promote healthy, protective behaviors. For more information about the social norms approach to address youth substance use, visit The Social Norms Resource Center's web site at www.socialnorms.org.
The AOD Partnership is a member of the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the Northwoods Coalition (Marshfield Clinic), Alliance for Wisconsin Youth, and is a recipient, along with the Wausau School District, of the Federal Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant out of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). |
